Emergency Response

First Aid kit

A first aid kit is a collection of supplies and equipment for use in giving first aid.[1] First aid kits may be made up of different contents depending on who has assembled the kit and for what purpose. It may also vary by region due to varying advice or legislation between governments or organisations.

The type of first aid facilities required in your workplace are determined by :

  • the laws and regulation of the state or territory you live in;
  • the type of industry you work in (industries such as mining may have specific industry regulations detailing specialised instructions);
  • the type of hazards present in your workplace;
  • the number of employees in your workplace;
  • the number of different locations that your workplace is spread over;
  • the proximity to local services (doctors, hospital, ambulance).

The first aid facility should meet the needs of your workplace. Facilities can include first aid kits or sick rooms.

If your workplace has rotating shifts then each shift should have it’s own first aid designated person. It is also best if your workplace has more than one designated first aid officer for any given shift to cover for workplace absences.

Common contents include items to help control bleeding, such as bandages, breathing barriers for performing CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation), and may contain some medicines.

Stretcher

A stretcher is a medical device used to carry casualties or an incapacitated person from one place to another. It is a simple type of litter, and still called by that name in some cases.

A stretcher is usually moved by two people, one at the head and the other at the feet. The casualty is placed on the stretcher, and can then be carried or wheeled away. Stretchers are indicated if a person is unable to walk by themselves, or if other requirements mean a "stair chair" (wheelchair), or similar device can not be used. Most modern civilian stretchers include straps to avoid further injury to the patient.

What is Personal Protective Equipment

Personal protective equipment (PPE) refers to protective clothing, helmets, goggles, or other garment designed to protect the wearer's body or clothing from injury by blunt impacts, electrical hazards, heat, chemicals, and infection, for job-related occupational safety and health purposes, and in sports, martial arts, combat, etc. body armor is combat-specialized protective gear. In British legislation the term PPE does not cover items such as armour. The terms "protective gear" and "protective clothing" are in many cases interchangeable; "protective clothing" is applied to traditional categories of clothing, and "gear" is a more general term and preferably means uniquely protective categories, such as pads, guards, shields, masks, etc.

PPE can also be used to protect the working environment from pesticide application, pollution or infection from the worker (for example in a microchip factory). The protection may be important in both ways, as with the use of disposable gloves by surgeons and dentists.
